What are corridos?

The corrido is a Mexican musical style. It is a popular narrative designed to be sung, recited or danced. Corridos are also known as tragedies, mañanitas, examples, verses, relations or couplets.

History of the Corridos

The elements of Polka and Folkloric were introduced to Mexico by Europeans in 1830, the sound of the guitar and accordion were adapted by townspeople and acquired as their own music. Artists likeNarciso Martinez He remembers hearing the Polka when he was just a child, however, some artists replaced the brass instruments with other sounds. They also began to tell their own stories and use letters to deliver news during the revolution. These songs would become known as Mexican bolores, a basis for the genres to come.
Over time, northern music played in rural lands would begin to merge with the bolero classics, giving birth to a new way of interpreting music popularly known as ranchera music, songs of the land. Decades later artists likePedro Infante, They brought ranchera music to their center of attention, their romantic ballads became known throughout the world as Mexico's own music.
Then they came Los tigres del Norte And everything changed, in the 70s, Los Tigres del Norte popularized a fictional song about drug trafficking called "Contrabando y Tracy", that corrido was successful and controversial, which gave rise to the genre."Narcocorrido"Los Tigres del Norte were one of the pioneers in the narcocorrido genre and although the appetite for their music was fierce, Mexico banned the genre, driving musicians to border cities and eventually to the United States.
Then it came Salino Sanchez, u A great farmer with a big heart of steel and a love for the Narcocorrido, with whom he brought Bandas de Sinaloa style music, Sanchez wrote songs "tailor-made" to immortalize drug traffickers. Just at that time the city of Los Angeles was witnessing a new Gangsta Rap movement. Mexican Americans and African Americans shared various spaces in the city center observing each other's cultures and musical styles, much like the Gangsta Rap movement, Sanchez sang about violence, drugs and Mexican cartels. Chalino Sanchez would be crowned "The King" of the Narcocorrido.
While the corridos were frozen in time, Gangsta Rap became widespread and began to be supported by the main labels, becoming synonymous with Pop, until Trap music was introduced. The spirit of Trap music attracted young Mexican artists. Going over the fundamental influences of urban rhythms, hip-hop sensibility and the layering of corridos lyrics, they broke it down and recreated it into what we now call Corridos Tumbados.
